Successful completion of the program requires the development of a complex understanding of documentary practices and traditions as well as creative skills in experimental media and new technologies. CalArts’ emphasis on exploration and creative risk-taking sets us apart from other music programs and conservatories. Students are encouraged to break away from conventional norms and experiment with new sounds, genres, and technologies.

In the planning of Taguatinga, there was no prior plan as there was for Ceilândia, for example. That was a city which, from when it was first created, was already fully planned out. While the plan for Taguatinga was done piecemeal, through juxtaposition, so that it’s all very different, with no symmetry there …” (Cid Lopes Filho, 1997). Our mission is to support and empower new generations of artists who reimagine our emerging relationships with new technologies. As a department, DXARTS challenges current trends, develops new approaches to artistic discovery, embraces diversity, and looks towards the future while critically engaging with traditional forms. We strive to probe the unknown through experimentation across media and disciplines. The philosophy of experimental art program the program is guided by a belief in the intersection of personal artistic work with interpretive knowledge and of the relevance of the individual documentary/experimental artist within the cultural history and life of communities. A key component to the program is the notion of creative engagement through the arts and the role of the artist in society.

Faculty, students, and alumni of CalArts’ three-year MFA program in Experimental Animation consistently win top awards at festivals worldwide, and are widely credited with helping to define the art of animation as we know it today. From Lúcio Costa’s perspective, the vegetation of the Cerrado savanna acted as a backdrop for the Praça dos Três Poderes (Square of the Three Powers), enabling him to express the symbolic contrast between the constructed civilization and the natural environment. In the memories of the satellite town residents, the savanna was a hostile environment that they had to endure in the early days of living in areas without any urban attributes. Indeed, the Wachowskis originally pitched their film as a live-action version of Ghost in the Shell. But the Wachowskis still had to find ways to recreate those images in real space—a problem requiring often unique solutions. As the above video claims, their success was to synthesize the various things they liked—manga, Hong Kong martial arts films, Buddhism, Continental Theory—into something coherent.
